How to sync a local folder with the Google Drive on your Android device

It may have occurred to you at least once that if you could sync a folder located on your device’s internal or external storage with the Google drive without copying the data one by one. Do not?

You are probably wondering, “Why a guide to this nonsense? Google’s hard drive must have the function. ” No, darling!

Although, it may sound like an obvious feature, but it is missing from the Google Drive Android app. Yes, we have already painted you surprised. (Also, hey Google! You know, if you’re listening, it would be great if you could sync the feature with the Drive app.)

Anyway, many of the apps that can be used for a purpose or two, allow you to add a folder to Google Drive, but most of them lack the sync feature, which would allow you to upload the contents of a folder in device storage to a folder on Google Drive. So that when you lose your phone, you can download the files from Google Drive. Or if you want to send a file to someone, you can just share their Google Drive link.

What if one of your applications does not support uploading data to Google drive or any other cloud storage in the free version or in any version – free or professional? What do you do for a living? Should I copy the files one by one to the Google drive, every time I add a new file?

How do you replicate changes from one excel sheet per second to two separate excel applications?

Umm no!

With Android, there is always a way.

Therefore, it is necessary to use an application that solves the problem, automatically uploading all the contents of the folder that you specify in the Google drive. For example, you have an SMS backup application that can back up your messages daily. You can configure the synchronization of the message backup folder of this application with the Google drive, so that you always have backup copies of the messages in the Google drive.

You just have to go to the Google Play Store and download an application called FolderSync Lite (free version). The free version has few limitations, as it supports only two cloud accounts, has no sync filters, and is bundled with ads, like all free apps. However, if you are interested in removing the ads and using more than two cloud accounts, buy the pro version.

FolderSync allows you to effortlessly sync data between local storage and cloud storage. Although the app is not intuitive for the first time (don’t worry!), The syncing process is fast and reliable.

How to sync a local folder on your device to store it on Google Drive

Step 1. Download and install FolderSync Lite (free version) from the Google Play Store.

However, asking permission under Android Marshmallow (6) was not mandatory, so you will see the following screen directly.

Step 3. Press the “Create new sync” button at the bottom to sync a local folder with Google Drive.

Step 4. The synchronization wizard will start. Give your sync folder pair a name to differentiate it from other pairs. Finally, click Next.

Step 5. Click “Add Account” to set up your Google Drive account. In the list that appears, select Google Drive.

Psst. If you want to sync the folder with any other cloud service like Dropbox, One Drive, etc., select that account. The rest of the steps remain the same.

Step 6. The application will ask you to set a unique name for your sync pair. You can give anything a name, and lastly, when entering the name, make sure that you hit the account authentication button and not that you don’t save it. (We know it is confusing since the SAVE is more prominent when writing the name.)

Step 7. You will access the Google login page. Sign in with your account and then authorize offline access.

Step 8. If all went well, you will get a toast by saying “Login successful”. In addition, on the next screen you will see the usage statistics for Google Name, Google Drive Quota and Google Drive. You will also see that “Authenticate account” has changed to “Unlink account” which you can use to unlink or remove your Google account from the application.

Press the Save button located in the lower right corner.

Your account is already set up. All you have to do is tell the application which folder to sync with Google Drive.

Step 9. After tapping the Save button, you are redirected to the “create new sync” screen, the screen from which you started. However, next to Account you will see the name you set for this sync. To sync the folder with Google Drive, tap NEXT in the lower right corner of the screen.

Step 10. Select the type of sync you want to use for this particular folder. There are three options:

  • To local folder: Use this option if you want to sync a folder on your Google drive with your device’s internal storage. Any changes you make to this folder on your device are not reflected on Google Drive, but changes you make on the Google Drive folder will be reflected on your device.
  • To remote folder: Use this option if you want to sync a folder on your Android device with Google Drive. Any changes you make to this device folder will be reflected in Google Drive, but any changes you make to Google Drive folder will not be reflected in the app. Note: If you want to make a backup copy of a folder of any other application, use this one so that the data of that application in a folder of your device is stored in Google Drive.
  • Two Way: Use this option if you want to sync a folder both ways, that is, you can change the contents of the folder both on the Google drive and on the device, and the same is reflected on the other.

We have selected the two-way option as it is the most suitable. However, if you want to sync only from local storage to Google drive, go with “To remote folder”. 3. Click Next.

Step 11. In the remote folder option, select the folder to which you want to synchronize the data and in the local folder select the folder from which you want to synchronize the data. Tap Next to go to the next screen.

Step 12. Use the scheduled sync option to set the time interval when you want to sync data. Finally, press Save.

That’s it.

Now relax and let the FolderSync application do its work. Any changes you make to this folder on your device will be reflected in the Google Drive and vice versa.

If the message backup makes new backups, the new backup files will be automatically uploaded to the Google Drive folder.

Some tips for using the FolderSync application

  • To view the sync status and sync history of the folder, tap the Sync status option on the home screen of the application.
  • If you want to add another cloud account, tap the “Accounts” option followed by the More button at the bottom. You must follow the steps above to add another account. However, you can only add two accounts in the Lite version. If you want to sync more accounts, you will have to say goodbye to the free version and buy a professional version.
  • If you want to sync more folders, tap on the Folder pairs option followed by the More (Add) button at the bottom of the screen.
  • The application offers you multiple synchronization options to choose from, such as “synchronization subfolders”, “Wi-Fi or mobile data connection”, “show notifications”, etc. You can configure the options according to your preferences.
  • You can change the theme of the app, in case you don’t like the default theme. To do this, tap on the three lines in the upper left corner, followed by settings, and finally tap on the theme option to change the theme.
  • Below the theme option, you will find another option called Home screen. This option allows you to change the home screen of the application – the first screen that appears when you open the application.
