Google has presented during the Google I/O 2021 the next version of its mobile operating system, Android 12. At the developer conference he was able to give the first details, betting on a new redesign and many important new features that will undoubtedly make it a leap in quality compared to previous versions.
In February Google launched the Android 12 Preview, from today the first beta of the system is available, a version that will mature until the final version. The beta will be able to be installed on different phones to see what will be the successor to Android 11 in the coming months.
Among the main changes is the new interface Material You, quite colorful to give a different look to what was shown in previous versions. In addition, several changes have been added to the quick settings, improved privacy and improvements in the split screen, among other new features to be discovered.
Material You, a totally renewed interface
The main novelty highlighted in Android 12 is none other than the renewed interface called Material You, important if you want to give a new fresh air. The Preview of the twelfth version of Android already gave a few small strokes of the notable change compared to the previous version.
In Android 12 there is a greater customization of icons, more rounded edges, elements with an adjusted size and everything much better positioned. The new version of the operating system also allows to adapt with its new colors the menus, adapting as if it were a chameleon, which makes it versatile and the same goes for the applications.
The dark mode adds important changes, ideal if it is often used on the device at certain times of the day or is kept permanently. The notification bubbles have new animations, apart from some changes for the widgets, the menu and the windows.
Material You will initially arrive as always happens to Google Pixel phones, it will do so in the fall with what is expected to be the final version. Google is working hard to get it ready after the summerso you have enough time to debug it.
New Always On screen and other news
An interesting novelty apart from the renewal of the interface is the new Always On screen, also known as ambient screen. The update brings with it widgets with a new style, besides the gestures to move between applications have been improved and it brings with it the one-hand mode.
App Pairs will allow Android 12 to fix two applications, with this both will always open once you click on one or the other. It is the easy way to use two apps at the same time on the screenall without dividing it, so it will have it as standard and not using the internal options.
Android 12 has debugged a lot when using the phone to play any of the available titles, making it the best experience ever. A floating bar is included with several options for the user, all configurable and left to the user’s liking.
Android 12 as a car key
An interesting novelty of Android 12 is being able to use the mobile device as a digital key, with this you can open the car, for this the device must have UWB (Ultra Wideband) technology. The first beneficiaries to use it will be the Google Pixel phones and the Samsung line that updates to version 12.
The brand that will accept the digital key with the mobile device will be the German BMW, although other well-known brands such as Honda, MG and the American Ford will soon do so. The first devices will be able to use this technology from the end of the year and it remains to be seen how it works.
The terminals with UWB are the following:
- Samsung Galaxy ZFold 2
- Samsung Galaxy 20 Ultra
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 12
- Pixel 4
- Google Pixel 4a
For now they are one of the few devices that are compatible from the beginning, then it will grow by having Xiaomi in mind this and want to include it in their next devices. Android 12 will make many manufacturers adapt quickly and can ultimately be used as a key.
New privacy panel
Privacy plays a fundamental role in Android 12, a point that he wanted to improve after previous versions had internal options on this point. The privacy panel of the new version of the operating system adds a menu in which it will show you the permissions that each of the applications is using.
This new privacy panel is configurable when it comes to removing and giving permissions, it will also be shown once you start the device and want to give certain permissions to each application you use. Shows some toggles to activate or deactivate each permissionso the best advice is to give those you trust.
An improvement that Google has added in Android 12 is that of PCC, which translated is Private Compute Core. The core will be used by the AI for an internal function and will be used by the AI in terms of hardware. Private Compute Core will save your important data, be it images, videos and documents.
Better CPU performance
Android 12 promises lower processor consumption, by up to 22%At least one of the engineers at Google I/O 2021 assured it. This will come in handy when it comes to taking advantage of it with other tasks, either with applications and with titles that require higher hardware performance, as is the case with the GPU (CPU Graphics).
The use of the high-performance core will be reduced by at least 15% so that consumption is lower and more efficient when it comes to having battery for the whole day. It is an important point, you work and a lot to make Android 12 become less burdensome than Android 11.
Android 12 will improve on sound, all because of the encoding layer, that will be attached to the video, the format that will be supported is HVEC. In addition, the AVI image will have compression without quality loss, taking an important step to catch up with MKV files.
Support for special audio is added, included in the MPEG-H codec and for a total of 24 channels. The twelfth version with this improves both audio and video and the beneficiary will be the user, who in the end will be able to work when converting video with the phone.
A novelty included in Android 12 is the elastic scroll, seen in the first iPhone released by Apple, the patent being released is now used by Google for its software. The animation bounces around once you reach the end of the menu, looking like you’re holding a rubber band.
This bounce effect stretches the letters, it is an added slight change that will surely come to be liked by many who use the Android operating system. Android 12 takes an important leap, adding interesting news and one of the important ones is the scroll, but not the only one.
Devices on which it can be installed
There are quite a few models on which the Android 12 beta can be installed, among them the first are the Pixel line in almost all its models. They are the first who have already seen how the beta works despite being in the beta phase, seeing that the first impression turns out to be really good.
Apart from the Google Pixel, there are several phone manufacturers that admit being able to install the operating system today. The best advice is to have version 11 currently installed on the phone, in case you have to uninstall once you try it.
